My good friend, and fabulous photographer, Suzanne Larocque, approached me with an idea for a special project last week. She explained that she had many vintage cameras, and would love to set up some still lifes with them and some flowers, do a little work in Photoshop, and get some gorgeous antique-ish images.
So, with Suzanne behind the camera, me as the stylist, and both of us begging photoshop to work what we were trying to do, we came up with a set of four images, that in our own humble opinion, will knock your socks off. There was one point in the photo editing session, where we simultanously jumped up and said “Oh, wow!” It is so awesome to do work that you’re passionate about, and when you get to do that work with friends, even better.
Suzanne and I plan on offering these images as note cards and art prints in the near future, and hope to collaborate on a similar project in the near future. The vintage cameras have an appeal for photographers, but how about us graphic designers? Think type.

We’ve all seen those motivational posters hanging in offices and breakrooms across the country, exclaiming things about customer service, and excellence. Do they leave you feeling very motivated? Yeah, me either.
Maybe what we all need is a dose of tough love, to throw us from our procrastination and bad attitudes. Someone to say “Quit Your Bellyaching” or “Get on with it”. These gocco prints from OrangeBeautiful are the kick in the butt we all seem to need. They are also available as notepads (in case you need a portable reminder), or as notecards (if you want to send a friend a not-so-subtle hint.)

All items available on the OrangeBeautiful Etsy site.

My living room is finally done (which is always a relative term for me, when is anything ever really done?) I didn’t realize how stunning the transformation was until prepping the photos for this post, and I had them side by side.
Before:

As you can see, things were very white before. That was easily cured with a coat of paint. The room had great bones and character to start with; high ceilings, huge windows, and beautiful hardwood floors.
After:

I created a little “drop zone”, if you will, by the door. This is an effort to keep myself organized. Come in, coat goes on the rack, keys go in the dish. There’s a place for mail as it comes and goes, a basket for umbrellas, gloves, and hat, and finally a mirror, to make sure I don’t leave the apartment looking like a hot mess.

With the paint and the furniture, it really becomes nice and cozy. No more cold stark walls! The paint is “Warming Peach” by Sherwin Williams. It really matches the tone of this old Victorian house, and does wonderful things when the light shines in through the large windows.

Oh my darling Amelie prints, all lined up over the side table! I love the touches of blue and aqua that keep popping up in here. I have a soft spot for using complementary colors. I love the energy that it gives. Later you’ll see all the orange thats creeping into my aqua bedroom. The plant here is a bright red gerbera daisy. When it blooms, it’s one more great spot of saturated color!

This is a great little sitting area. This Ikea slipper chair is very comfortable, and sits next to this very affordable Target stool, which I’m using as an end table. It has that Mid Century look without the price tag. I figure I splurged on the Eames chairs for the dining room, I can pass off a few knock offs in the rest of the place. I’m showing off a few of my finds from last year’s Brimfield Fair. A perpetual calendar, and some letterpress letters. They spell out design. What else, right?

Moving gave me an excuse to cruise Etsy in search of great prints to fill my new place. I make a point of looking for items from independent designers and artists when looking for art for my walls.

1. The Pensive Wallpaper Print – The Black Apple
I understand the look she’s giving, but it’s completely indescribable. She’s like my kindred Mona Lisa.
2. SO VERY HAPPY (version 2) – dazeychic
Have you ever seen a bird that’s latched on to a french fry in the Micky D’s parking lot. They need to bottle that kind of joy.
3. STEEL GRAY Keep Calm and Carry On – Pressureless
This print is going in the office. Nuff said.
4. A Simple Pledge - Lure Design
So I promise that I have never used any of these fonts, but it can’t hurt to lead by example right?
5, 6 & 7. Amelie Set of Three Prints- Almost Famous
Favorite movie of all time. Every time I see it, it makes me feel better about life. These prints are a tiny reminder of that.
