Sharing the Love.

2010love

A link to this shirt came across my Twitter feed the other day, and I did a little happy dance in my seat upon seeing this design.  Along with the typographic genius (how many times can you see 2010 and love?), the shirt is a reminder for positive change.  Did I mention that it’s only $20.10?  Clever and inexpensive.

From the mouths of the designers:

“2010love is a symbol created to inspire people to make a positive change in their own lives and the lives of others, starting now. Spread the word by wearing it.”

For the month of April, the Design Sisters will be donating 10% of proceeds to The Earth Day Network, in honor of Earth Day on April 22.

Tough Love.

Friday, February 26th, 2010

We’ve all seen those motivational posters hanging in offices and breakrooms across the country, exclaiming things about customer service, and excellence.  Do they leave you feeling very motivated?  Yeah, me either.

Maybe what we all need is a dose of tough love, to throw us from our procrastination and bad attitudes.  Someone to say “Quit Your Bellyaching” or “Get on with it”.  These gocco prints from OrangeBeautiful are the kick in the butt we all seem to need.  They are also available as notepads (in case you need a portable reminder), or as notecards (if you want to send a friend a not-so-subtle hint.)

Paper Hearts.

When I think of hearts, I think of them as being frilly, sappy, seasonal and occassionally cliche– and believe me, I am anything but frilly.  Sarah and Bendrix, a shop based in England, have changed my mind.  Their art uses hearts as rich and beautiful texture.  I find myself actually wanting to hang one of these in my house, year round.  Shh, don’t tell, you’ll ruin my rep.

You can buy these pieces on the Sarah and Bendrix Etsy shop here.

For the Birds.

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

I already have a totally awesome shower curtain that I love, but I feel like it’s such a shame when I see something I like, and have absolutely no use for it.  So someone, anyone, buy this shower curtain, so that I can sleep at night, knowing that someone is enjoying it’s greatness.

Alt Design Summit 2011, Here I Come.

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

altbutton1

Have you ever heard about an event, that sounds so mind-blowingly amazing, you wished you knew about it sooner, so you could actually go?  That’s me with the Alt Design Summit, which is going on now in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Next year, Alt, next year.

Alt is a three day conference on design.  Not just graphic design, but everything design.  There are discussions about what’s new, and why design is important in our world.

The Alt people say this is who should attend the Alt Design Summit:

- People that love talking about design in all its iterations. What it is. How it’s changing. Why it’s important.
- People that read sites like Apartment Therapy/drive German cars/subscribe to magazines from Europe.
- Design or lifestyle bloggers who want to (finally!) meet their fellow design and lifestyle bloggers.
- People from across all the design disciplines: graphic, industrial, fashion, interior, product, textile. Plus illustrators and photographers too.
- Business Owners who make pretty things and want to figure out how to get their products on design sites.
- Advertising Agencies and Marketing firms that want help creating social media campaigns for their design-minded clients.
- Employees who would love to get credit for working while actually hitting the slopes.
- People who create inspiration boards.
- People who look at inspiration boards.
- Star-struck film fans obsessed with the Sundance hype who want to spend a weekend celebrity sighting.

Yes. Yes. Yes, and yes.  Did I mention Sundance?  I am so there.

So. Not. Funny.

A friend passed this on to me over Facebook, anticipating my outrage over this sacrilege.  A tee with the word Helvetica, written in Comic Sans.  As the website describes it: “A slap in the typeface.”  That’s for sure.  Think of this tee for a special gift, for a graphic designer that you really, really hate.

Four Color Socks.

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

These socks by Ulterior Motive (which come in cyan, magenta, yellow, and black!) are available through Supermarket.  If only I could wear all four pairs at once so people could really grasp how clever this is.  I imagine myself arguing the brilliance– “CMYK, like the four color printing process, but in socks!!!  Oh, nevermind…”

Design Goods from ThinkGeek.

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Whenever I see graphic design novelty items, my heart goes all aflutter.  I admit it, I’m a total design dork.  The first step is recognition, and I am totally over that.

With that said, ThinkGeek has my number.

bf65_pantone_espresso_cup_and_saucer_setHow do you take your coffee?  I personally go for Pantone 1545 C.  This Pantone Cup and Saucer set from ThinkGeek insures that you never get your coffee too light (or too dark) ever again.

Twist Fair, Northampton, MA.

Monday, November 16th, 2009

What a great weekend!  I spent half of Saturday walking through the Twist Fair in Northampton with a good friend of mine.  This isn’t your grandma’s craft fair.  Another friend most fittingly said, “There isn’t a doily to be found!”  Which is oh, so true.

As put by the people of Twist:

“Twist is an exciting event showcasing original handmade goods and art, held twice a year (May and November) in Northampton, MA. The show features a multitude of talented and unique vendors, a live DJ, entertainment, and refreshments in a fun and lively festival atmosphere.”

So time to dish on my finds!  No one can make their way through a see of sensory overload without a few purchases.

My first purchase was this lovely pair of earrings from Windfall Designs.  They are so delicate, and remind me of birch trees.  If at all possible, they seems natural and modern, all in the same breath.

Next we move on to a perennial favorite, Happy Owl Glassworks.  This may be my fifth purchase from creator, Tracy Bull.  By going to a live event, I was able to get my hands on a piece that isn’t available through any of her online outlets- an olive green recycled glass pendant with a tiny white pine tree.

Because Tracy’s work is so great, I have to post an image, so I’ll go ahead and give you a peek at the runner up.  If the tree lost, this pendant totally would have won the race.  It is still available online, so I guess there’s still an opportunity!

Next is an artist who has been on the top of my Etsy favorite list for a while, Nervous System.  All of her jewelry, created from Stainless Steel and Gold is modeled after pieces of the human nervous system.  These are beautiful objects on their own, but with added understanding, they are brought to a whole new level.  Who knew science could be so wonderful?

My new earrings:

Last, but certainly not least, is Sharp Shirter.  I am a total sucker for a well designed screen tee, and Sharp Shirter did not disappoint.  It took every ounce of restraint I have to leave with one shirt and not five.

This is my little beauty:

And these are the rest that caught my eye.
